IRON MT. -- The family of a wounded solider is honoring him and other fallen soldiers in a unique way: a 16-foot carved tree stump outside of their home in Iron Mountain.

When the tree died, the Jokinnen family knew they wanted to create a head-turning display for the public. It took three months to finalize a design--carved into the tree by chainsaw carver Nathan Potlicker--an American Indian feather to honor fallen Army SPC Robert Voakes, Jr. from Baraga, as well as the Patriot Guard logo and the memorial for fallen soldiers. Son Donnie Jokinnen served in Iraq as an IED road clearance driver and was hit by an attack that claimed the lives of several of his comrades.

"When we told our son we were doing this, we asked him for permission, how he felt about it. He got very emotional, very emotional," said Jeanie Jokinnen, a family member.

The memorial was expected to be completed by Sunday evening.
