ESCANABA -- It may have been a mild winter, but there are still many families in need of heating assistance.  The Menominee-Delta-Schoolcraft Community Action Agency is helping out.

The annual Walk for Warmth event is taking place at the Menominee Senior Center and the Elks Lodge in Escanaba this Saturday.

The locally raised money helps people with heating-related emergencies. 

About $32,000 is available through state funds. There is $220,000 in deliverable fuel money through the federal government. 

Officials hope to raise between $8,000 and $10,000 during the walk.

"I encourage people to sign up for our weatherization program," said CAA Executive Director William Dubord.  "We encourage people to look at the budget plan for those vendors that offer it.  And the idea is that we really hope that by giving out that kind of information, we're not seeing people year after year after year."

Registration for the fundraiser is at 9 a.m.  The walk is at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
