DETROIT -- Forty-eight school districts across Michigan are now being monitored by the state Department of Education because of the districts' ongoing financial problems. That story was reported by the Detroit News Wednesday.

The districts include the school systems in Detroit and Highland Park that already have state-appointed emergency managers.

The districts under scrutiny have deficits ranging from 1 percent to 44 percent of their revenues. They're working on reducing their deficits by closing schools, cutting wages and outsourcing jobs.

In 2003, Michigan had only 10 districts that were running deficits.
