MARQUETTE -- Marquette County Board members expressed their opposition to a controversial severance tax at Tuesday's meeting.

The severance tax proposed by Representative Matt Huuki targets non-ferrous mining. Board members are concerned it could end up costing local government millions of dollars in tax revenue.

Last week, some commissioners attended a video conference regarding the proposed legislation.

Commissioner Bill Nordeen expressed his distrust of Lansing.

"We're concerned with what might transpire because we don't trust Lansing, that's the problem.   And I didn't get a warm and fuzzy feeling after that video conference because I didn't think they had any answers.  They had a lot of vague comments and speculation, but they didn't have any answers," said Nordeen.

Members of the board said that they had been in contact with Huuki and Senator Tom Casperson regarding the severance tax. Both Huuki and Casperson said they would fight against tax revenue leaving the U.P.
