UPDATE: Pedestrian killed in Republic

REPUBLIC -- Update Thursday December 29, 2011 3:40 a.m. 

State police have released the name of an 18-year-old Republic girl who was struck by a vehicle while walking on M-95 Wednesday evening.   

According to the Michigan State Police from the Negaunee post, the incident happened just before 6 p.m. on M-95, south of County Road 601 in Republic Township.

 



Two pedestrians were walking north on M-95. One of them, 18-year-old Morgan Mercer of Republic, was hit by a northbound vehicle driven by 83-year-old Theodore Pepin of Ishpeming.

Mercer was taken to Bell Hospital where she was pronounced dead.  The other pedestrian was not hit or injured.
    
Pepin and his passenger, 81-year-old Betty Pepin of Ishpeming, were uninjured.   

The crash remains under investigation.

State Police are on the scene of a fatal accident in Republic.  Few details are being released, but police did confirm that a car hit a pedestrian on M-95.

It happened just before 6 p.m. Wednesday.  The pedestrian has been killed.

The name of the victim and the circumstances surrounding the accident have not been released.
