MARQUETTE -- A former Bishop for the Catholic Diocese of Marquette has passed away.

Retired Bishop Mark Schmitt died on Wednesday in Depere, Wisconsin after a brief illness.  He was 88 years old.

Schmitt served as Bishop of the Diocese of Marquette for over 14 years from 1978 to 1992.  Visitation and a funeral mass for Bishop Schmitt will be held at St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette.
