MARQUETTE -- The Facebook Story of the Day for Wednesday was about basic first aid.  What should you know and how do you learn it?

The first steps to first aid are the three C's:  check, call, and care.  Check the victim to see what is wrong and then call 911.

When it comes time to caring for a victim, you can learn how to treat wounds, allergic reactions, choking and injuries from a basic first aid accreditation course.  Instructors say the more people certified in basic first aid, the better.

"Everybody should know first aid," said NMU First Aid Instructor Katie Theut.  "You don't have to be a police officer, you don't have to be a trained medical professional in any way, shape, or form.  You're going to utilize basic first aid training on family members or friends; you can also utilize it on a random person that is in need of first aid assistance on the street."

Northern Michigan University's Recreation Center offers a basic first aid training course the third Saturday of every month.
