MARQUETTE -- Our Facebook Story of the Day took a look at exercising in the cold. With the end of warmer seasons, some of people think it's time to stow away our bikes and sneakers and hibernate...but not here in the U.P.
We have plenty of beautiful outdoors to use for recreation and exercise, especially in the colder months.
Down Wind Sports in Marquette is stocking up for typical winter recreation including snowshoeing and cross country skiing. They say it's actually easier to work out in the Upper Peninsula in the winter months because our high volumes of snow offer ample opportunities.
However, this year's cold weather trend is winterizing your summer workout routine.
"They're making footwear that's lightweight that will keep your feet warm, and people are starting to explore a lot of trails," said Bill Thompson of Down Wind Sports. "We're also seeing a lot more people extending their bike season and biking year-round with studded tires and wider tires that are able to float through snow. So those people have the passion for biking, and they're making it a year-round sport now."
Down Wind says the most important part of working out in the cold weather is dressing properly. There is no bad weather, just bad clothing. They suggest new lightweight wool or synthetic material which absorbs moisture.
