KINGSFORD -- The United States Post Office Processing Center in Kingsford is one of nearly 250 facilities being studied for possible closure, according to a statement released on Thursday.

The study is set to run from September 15 to early 2012 and will include public meetings held near locations being studied.

If the Kingsford facility is closed, mail will be processed from a facility in Green Bay, according to Sabrina Todd of the USPS.

The consolidation and closure of facilities is expected to reduce mail processing equipment by as much as 50 percent, decrease the nationwide transportation network, eliminating 35,000 positions and revising the standards for First-Class Mail.

The cuts are expected to save the USPS up to three billion dollars a year.  The postal service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
