Volunteers make YMCA shutdown possible

Work is continuing at the Marquette County YMCA during its annual shutdown.

MARQUETTE -- All of that work wouldn't be possible without the dozens of volunteers that are helping.

Members of the YMCA, community, and AmeriCorps are pitching-in this week: moving weight equipment to install the new floor in the wellness center, painting in the pool area, and weeding outside of the building.

"We've been having a good time working with the sponsor organization here, they're really nice and they really are great for the work that we've been doing with them," says Darcy Forlenza of the AmeriCorps.  "We're grateful to have the opportunity to work with the children and to help them to make their facilities cleaner and nicer for the kids so it's been a great experience for us."

The nine americorps volunteers, based out of Iowa, are helping at all three Marquette County YMCA sites.

Officials say members can go to the Negaunee YMCA until the facility re-opens next Tuesday.
