Weekend excursion turns tragic with fatal car accident

An excursion to an Iron County vegetable stand resulted in tragedy for an Iron River family when a woman was killed and several others injured in a two-car accident

IRON RIVER TWP. -- The accident happened Saturday afternoon on US-2 in Iron River Township.

Seventy-year-old Winifred Vassar was driving a Chevy Lumina that was also occupied by Kyle Decorah and Ward Vassar, all of Iron River.  While attempting to pull onto US-2 from a private driveway, Vassar's car was broadsided by a Ford van driven by Ronald Stafford of Iron River Township.

Ms. Vassar and the occupants of her vehicle were transported to North Star Hospital.  She later died.

Decorah was later transported to M.G.H.  Mr. Vassar was treated and released.

Stafford, along with the six passengers in his vehicle, were all treated at North Star Hospital and released.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.
