Michigan law enforcement steps up patrols
MARQUETTE -- Over the limit, under arrest...that's the campaign 35 Michigan county law enforcement agencies are pitching through Labor Day weekend.
The sobering campaign, announced Thursday, kicks off just in time for college students returning to campus, and the heavily traveled Labor Day holiday. The holiday weekend is a dangerous time for impaired driving incidents.
Over 20 people were killed in traffic crashes during 2010's Labor Day holiday, and 10 were alcohol related.
On Thursday, officials announced that extra patrols will be on the roads for extra impaired driving enforcement.
"What they're designed to do is put those officers out on the street where they're needed the most, to combat this and make sure everyone makes it home safely," said Captain Guy LaPlante of NMU Public Safety. "That's the underlying statement that we're trying to get out there."
Northern Michigan University health promotion specialists were also at Thursday's press conference announcing the release of enhanced cab cards, which contain more facts and figures on impaired driving and taxi options.
