SPREAD EAGLE, WI -- It’s been part of U.P. summers for more than 50 years. But the Badwater Ski-Ters show in Spread Eagle, Wisconsin continues to amaze the fans, which is exactly how some of the performers got their start.
"I always saw the jumpers and said I want to do that," said 18-year-old Andy Ross, who is a jumper on the team. "Over the next few years, my sister joined and then after that, I slowly joined and became more into it. Now it's the only thing I do in the summer."
The free shows happen most Wednesday and Sunday evenings from June until September.
But lately it's not just the local spectators who have been impressed with the Ski-Ters. Earlier this summer the team came in second place for Division II at the Wisconsin state tournament.
And the success didn't end there.
"Last weekend the show team went down to Tomahawk, Wisconsin to compete in the National Division II Water Ski Show Championship," said Ski-Ters member Steve Roell. "They came in third place which was really quite an accomplishment for this small of a club."
Despite all the success, the performers haven't forgotten where they came from and still make it a point to put on a show all summer long.
"It actually means a lot because I've been doing it for so long," said 19-year-old performer Paige Short, who joined the team when she was eight. "If I wasn't in it anymore, I wouldn't know what to do with my summer."
The final four shows of the summer will be every Sunday through Labor Day.
