MANISTIQUE -- Emergency crews were called out to Lake Michigan to help a man on a tug vessel suffering a medical emergency.
According to the Schoolcraft County Sheriff's Department, they were alerted of the situation by the U.S. Coast Guard in St. Ignace at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday night.
A 62-year-old man on the tug was suffering a possible stroke. The tug vessel was about eight miles south of Manistique Harbor. Due to the slow speed of the tug, a call for emergency help went out.
The Schoolcraft County Sheriff's Department dispatched their patrol boat, while the Coast Guard sent out a helicopter. The patrol boat, with deputies and EMTs from Manistique Public Safety on board, arrived to the scene first, around 8:33 p.m. They began administering aid, trying to stabilize the man. A short time later, the helicopter arrived. It was determined that the patrol boat would be the safer mode of transporting the victim to shore.
They arrived back at Manistique Harbor at 9:16 p.m., and the Manistique Public Safety Ambulance brought the patient to Schoolcraft Memorial.
At this time, the name of the patient and his condition are not being released.
