MARQUETTE -- Recently crews started work on phase two of the Lakeshore Boulevard water main project.

Phase one was completed right on schedule and consists of about 1,000 feet of road.

Crews are currently removing asphalt to replace a four-inch water main that was installed in 1918.  The water main will be replaced with a more efficient eight-inch water main, as well as giving residents on the road access to the city's sanitary sewer system.

Since the road is a dead end, crews are utilizing LS & I service roads to get residents to their homes during the construction.

"We're actually coming off the city Lakeshore Boulevard project, detouring them over to an LS&I service road and then back up around Lakeshore Boulevard to the west of here so people can at least get to their homes that are further west of the project," said City Engineer Keith Whittington.

The project has a total of four phases which are scheduled to be completed by October 20.
