KINGSFORD -- After experiencing 40 major disasters in 30 states over the last three months, the American Red Cross is in need of your help.

Tuesday, residents lined up at First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford to donate blood to the Red Cross.

Officials at Tuesday's drive encouraged everyone interested to donate, especially blood types O negative, B negative, and A negative, which are in critical need.

In May and June, the donations were at the lowest levels experienced by the Red Cross in 12 years.

Blood donations are used across the U.P. and when needed nationwide.

"The importance is the blood goes everywhere, it's not just here," said Blood Drive coordinator Greg Honeywell.  "It does go to places in the U.P., but it also could end up in Kansas or North Dakota with the flood victims."

Only five percent of eligible Americans donate blood.
