MARQUETTE -- Springtime in the U.P. means many different types of wildlife in our backyards, but the Department of Natural Resources is advising residents to watch out for bears.

DNR officials say this time of year there is increased bear activity as bears are awakening from their hibernation and looking for food.

They recommend that if you see a bear in your area, take down any bird feeders, put away grills and any trash cans for at least two weeks.  This will give the bear enough time to break the habit of returning to that location for food.

"We just want to remind folks that if you put food out for wildlife, you can't be surprised when wildlife come, you know," said DNR Biologist Brian Roell.  "The bears don't know any better; they just know there's a food source."

If you have taken steps to prevent further bear activity and have not seen results, contact the DNR for assistance.
