Take kids and parents on free airplane rides
CALUMET -- The Keweenaw chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association took some lucky people for a free ride in honor of International Learn to Fly Day.
The group meets once a month at the Houghton County Airport, and if the weather's good, they take kids participating in the Young Eagles program on a quick flight. The intent to get kids excited about flying and to consider becoming a pilot.
On Saturday, even a few adults got up in the air, and everyone checked out the line-up of small planes.
“I show them all the controls, how the rudder works, make tight turns and explain what an airfoil is,” said chapter president Douglas McKenzie. “On my last two flights, we did a little weightless flying, which makes people scream into their headsets. But we haven't lost anybody.”
The group has also begun building airplanes from a kit. They finished the first plane last year, and two others are in the process.
