ESCANABA -- Car seats carry very precious cargo, but there are a few things parents should know when it comes to properly and safely installing them.
Last Saturday at Advance Auto Parts in Escanaba, Child Passenger Safety technicians gave parents and caregivers a quick lesson. They checked for recalls and made sure that none of the seats had been through a car crash.
The technicians estimated that 90 percent of all car seats are improperly installed. One common issue they found was that the seat harnesses weren't tight enough.
"Well, we want to make sure that once they buckle it in, that their seatbelt locks or they use the anchor system, depending on what they have in their car," said Child Passenger Safety Instructor Judy Pruner. "They need to read the owner's manual in the vehicle to find this out."
Children should sit in a car seat until they're eight years old unless they're over four feet nine inches tall.
