MARQUETTE -- To address the growing concern of sports concussions in the U.P., Marquette General and Northern Michigan University teamed up to co-sponsor the Upper Peninsula Sports Concussion Summit in Marquette.

Guest speaker, Dr. Mark Lovell, presented current concussion management guidelines and state legislative efforts across the nation.

The event was intended for physicians, nurses, therapists, and athletic trainers as well as students and their families.

"Parents and athletes should really be aware that if they're having symptoms like headaches, dizziness, things like that, after a bad hit, they need to tell somebody," warned Lovell.  "And the parents need to be aware that these symptoms are symptoms of concussion, and they really need to report that to their doctor or medical professional."

Concussions in sporting events is an issue from the prep league right to the pros.
