LANSING -- The Michigan State Police plan to close 21 posts across the state, without trooper layoffs, as part of a plan to save nearly $21 million.

The plan announced Thursday includes post closings in Detroit as well as Adrian, Bad Axe, Battle Creek, Bridgeport, Bridgman, Cheboygan, Corunna, Gladwin, Groveland, Hastings, Iron River, Ithaca, L'Anse, Manistee, Munising, Newaygo, Richmond, Stephenson, Traverse City and Ypsilanti.

The changes would take effect with the start of Michigan's next budget year in October.

"The MSP is confident the service levels will either be unchanged or enhanced given the increased flexibility in deployment and scheduling provided by this regional policing plan," said Director Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue of the Michigan State Police.

Troopers would be deployed throughout the state mostly from remaining posts and other buildings the state police would call detachments.  Some troopers assigned to rural areas would be based from their homes.

"The department may look different, but our mission is clear," says Kibbey Etue.  "We will continue to provide public safety while respecting the rights and dignity of all persons."
