EAST LANSING (AP) -- Michigan State University wants to get in on the madness of March, putting together its own tournament of sorts.
The East Lansing school is hosting what it calls the Great Lakes SmackDown Terrestrial Terror, which will run in conjunction with the NCAA basketball tournament. In it, 16 terrestrial invasive species will vie to become national champion.
For example, the stink bug will work to exterminate the gypsy moth, and the giant hogweed will try to make bacon of the feral swine.
Online voters will advance the winners through the brackets to decide a champion.
Michigan State put on a similar competition last year featuring aquatic invasive species. The quagga mussel tussled with all comers and emerged victorious.
