The Marquette County Sheriff's Office warns residents not to fall for it
MARQUETTE -- The Marquette County Sheriff's Department is sending out a warning about a phone scam. It starts when the scammer calls you, pretending to be with a police agency or a hospital.
They make up a story about a loved one being in an accident and ask you to call the officer at the scene by dialing *72 and a phone number they provide.
Marquette County Sheriff Mike Lovelace says don't do it. It activates a call forwarding feature that can leave you stuck with high phone bills.
If this does happen to you, Sheriff Lovelace says call your phone company to dispute the charges. They may advise you to file a police report or a complaint with the Attorney General.
