Winter storm in the works

Though we're already seeing some fresh white stuff to start this work week, this isn't the winter storm that we've been hinting at for the past couple days. These light snow showers and flurries scattered across the U.P. are just the tip of the wintry weather iceberg.
Low pressure in the southern plains is going to gradually strengthen and lift towards us overnight Tuesday and into Wednesday morning. By the early afternoon, moderate to possibly heavy snow will cover most of Upper Michigan before it starts to lift out on Wednesday night.
This isn't the entire story, though. Our temperatures are going to return to near average--and even above average at times--and so exactly what kind of precipitation we see from this storm is still a fluid situation. How far warmer, above-freezing air wraps around this low as it passes by (and where exactly the low tracks) will determine who sees what, and consequently, where the heaviest snow will fall. As it appears now, the far southern and eastern counties could see a change to a wintry mix or freezing rain, with all other locations remaining snowy.
We'll be monitoring this storm very closely as it approaches. Keep checking the weather page for the latest info.
