A new poll shows voter opposition to proposed changes
LANSING (AP) -- Sixty-eight percent of Michigan residents surveyed in a recent poll oppose legislation that would allow people with concealed weapons permits to carry handguns in places like schools, day care centers, sports arenas, and churches.
Poll results released Friday by Lansing-based EPIC-MRA show only 29 percent of the 600 people questioned Feb. 12 through Feb. 17 favored the legislation. Three percent say they are undecided.
The poll has a sampling error of plus or minus four percentage points.
Democrats oppose the proposal 85 percent to 12 percent, while Republicans oppose it 56 percent to 40 percent.
State law currently allows anyone with a concealed weapon permit to carry a handgun most anywhere.
Places of worship, educational institutions, entertainment facilities, hospitals, courtrooms, and bars are among places where concealed weapons are prohibited.
