Phi Kappa Tau wins for fourth consecutive year

HOUGHTON -- The snow statues are up and the judging is done, so who took the top spots at this year's Winter Carnival?

Phi Kappa Tau's Narnia-inspired snowscape earned the fraternity its fourth consecutive win in the month-long snow statue competition.  In addition to a lion, witch and wardrobe, the team's intricate ice detail helped bring the fantasy to life.

As for the women's category, classic tales were the topic of Alpha Sigma Tau's winning statue.

From Moby Dick to nursery rhymes, the sorority's "Alive Library" was an easy choice for the judges.

"You can tell the quality of work that some of these girls put in," said judge Glen Tolksdorf.  "I just talked to one of the girls here who said they spent four weeks on it.  It's unbelievable."

Many of the other statues were admired by spectators.

The “Rainbow Fish” and the “Little Engine That Could” captured fond childhood memories, while Harry Potter reflected a more recent literary obsession.

"We like to come out every year to see the statues," said Julie Morehouse.  "Both of our kids graduated from Tech and moved away so we have to carry on the tradition of looking at all of the great artwork."

"With the “Little Engine That Could,” they did a really good job on the engine," said Tech student, Joe Miller.  "The wheel is solid ice and it's so clear.  It's great detail work.  So far that's probably my favorite."

Of course, all of the statues are really impressive and worth checking out.  If you haven't seen them already you should definitely come to campus and take a look around.
