Very cold, locally heavy snow today

With temperatures in the single digits above (and below) zero across Upper Michigan to start the day, it definitely feels like the beginning of February.  Blustery conditions aren't making it feel any better outside either, with most towns experiencing wind chills in the teens below zero.

But while everyone is seeing the cold weather, most people aren't seeing the snow.  Those who are, however, are really getting it.  Reports of over a foot of snow yesterday and last night have come in from near Grand Marais, and they're still seeing snow.  Other locations seeing significant accumulations today will include the Keweenaw Peninsula and the Copper Country and points north of Newberry.  The north-central highlands and Munising will see lighter amounts.

Elsewhere?  Partly cloudy to mostly clear skies will dominate.

That snow will diminish overnight tonight, but it's going to be very cold.  Still, breezy winds will drive wind chills into the 20s below zero, so try to limit any time outside.  Students at MTU in Houghton staying out for the all-nighter should be careful by covering exposed skin and taking breaks inside to stay warm.

There is a silver lining--temperatures by the end of the weekend look to improve dramatically across the region.  Check out our weather page for the details!
