ESCANABA -- February is Pet Dental Month, but one Escanaba veterinarian says that pet owners should keep an eye on their pets' dental health every month of the year.
By the age of three, 70 percent of cats and 80 percent of dogs already have some level of periodontal disease. This inflammation and infection of gum tissue becomes infected with bacteria, and this can lead to more serious heart of kidney problems.
Dr. Mackie of the Escanaba Veterinary Clinic said pet owners should regularly brush their dog's teeth on a weekly basis.
"If they come in and have that professional cleaning done, sent home with products to help prevent that from coming back, and will commit to some care, this is absolutely reversible," said Mackie.
Other home care pet practices can be to give your cat or dog dental chews or buying a pet food that's specifically marked to improve their dental health.
