Mich. governor wants to put item pricing on shelf

It was mentioned during his first State of the State address

WESTLAND, MICH. (AP) -- Gov. Rick Snyder wants to put Michigan's item pricing law on the shelf.

The Republican told lawmakers during his first State of the State address he'd like to see them eliminate the measure that mandates price tags on every item.

His declaration has been met with concern by unions and open arms by retailers.

One backer of Snyder's idea is Frank Kelley, the former attorney general, who is the man perhaps most associated with item pricing in Michigan.

Kelley says technology has finally reached the point that sticking a price on every item has become unnecessary. Plus, he says, if the rest of the U.S. can make it work, so can Michigan.

Michigan is one of only two states with such a requirement.

Massachusetts' law applies only to food retailers.
