IRON MOUNTAIN -- The Iron Mountain Police Department is reminding residents to be smart about their personal information.

The reminder comes after an attempted fraud this week where two Iron Mountain residents were called by someone posing as a detective with the Detroit Police Department.

The unknown caller said he was investigating credit card fraud and needed credit card numbers to verify if theirs was stolen.

Police say both people called did not give out any information.

"We can't stress enough that your personal information is just that, it's your personal information, and you shouldn't be giving it out to anybody.  Unfortunately two, three times a year we end up with a person or a resident that's been convinced to provide some personal information," said Iron Mountain Chief of Police, Pete Flaminio.

Police say they receive nearly half a dozen phone calls per week about attempted fraud over the phone.
