IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP -- "It just went so fast, it was like I said, like being, seeing it in a movie,” said Oma resident Joyce Szynalik.

A fire roared at the main lodge of the Big Powderhorn Mountain Resort Thursday.  After firefighters from nine area departments fought the blaze, little remains.  But a room at the northeast corner of the chalet was determined to be the area the fire started.  This room was commonly used to store trash.  At this time, the Fire Marshall is still unable to determine the exact cause of the fire.

"The condition of the building, it's probably a total loss I would say," said Fire Chief Jamie Peite of Ironwood Township Fire Department.  As for the guests who were staying in the Main Lodge, personal belongings have been lost, but no one was injured.

"Most of those folks were scheduled to depart that day,” said General Manager Bruce Noren.  “So no one was inconvenienced by it."

Housing throughout the village can accommodate 2,500 guests.  And the fire didn't have much of an impact as far as rooms were concerned.  The resort only lost 10 rooms in the blaze that could house 40 people total.  As for some of the documents, management says they could still be recovered.

“We're optimistic,” Noren said.  “We've seen some of our filing cabinets--it looks like we're going to be able to recover quite a bit."

Thursday, business was booming and the resort plans on being 80 percent full this weekend.  And the fire didn’t end up changing many plans.

"Oh no, no not at all,” Szynalik said.  “We were here at about a little after 8 o'clock ready to ski this morning."

And more good news:  Noren tells me after the investigation is completed in the coming weeks, the plans are to immediately demolish the lodge.  Management hopes to start rebuilding this spring and summer.  Also, none of the 140 employees that work at the ski resort will be losing their jobs due to the fire.
