Seventy-one-year-old dies in house fire
MARINETTE COUNTY -- Remains have been found of the Marinette County resident who was thought to have perished when his home caught fire Tuesday.
The Marinette County Dispatch was notified of a house fire in the Town of Lake around 4:29 p.m. There were explosions going off and heavy smoke coming from the house when officials from the Town of Lake Fire Department, Grover Porterfield Fire Department, Crivitz Rescue Squad and Sheriff's deputies arrived on the scene.
The resident of the home was 71-year-old William J. Schroeder, who lived alone. A family member was on the phone with Schroeder when he said there was a fire shortly before being disconnected from the call.
The family member's concern caused them to call a neighbor of Schroeder, who went to the house, but the intense fire and smoke caused him to leave.
The fire and sheriff's departments are still investigating the scene of the fire Wednesday morning to determine the cause of the blaze.
An autopsy has been ordered to determine whether the remains found are Schroeders.
