HOUGHTON COUNTY -- As Christmas approaches, airport officials nationwide say air travel will continue to get heavier.

On the ground, about 90 percent of holiday travel will be done by car.

Either way, holidays can be the worst time to travel, but here in the U.P., so far things are going smoothly at Houghton County Airport.  With only a couple of days left until Christmas, the airport lobby was full of people picking others up or waiting to board the next plane.

Good weather has helped many of the flights stay on schedule, though there have been a few delays due to traffic or weather in Chicago.

"Our loads are normal, and normal means that they're heavy.  So it's always a good idea that people get to airports early and give themselves enough time because if they're late, sometime they have to be left behind," said Airport Manager, Dennis Hext

The extra baggage people travel with during the holidays can also be a hassle, so officials recommend knowing which items you're checking ahead of time.
