Lake ice is still thin

MARQUETTE COUNTY -- With the cold weather upon us, many ice fisherman are ready to get out on the lakes, but the Marquette County Sheriff warns that ice may not be as thick as it needs to be.

Even with the winter weather, the sheriff warns that ice on lakes in Marquette County could be as thin as a half inch when, generally, two inches is needed to support an adult.

"The sheriff recommends 'no ice is safe ice,' and at this time, ice freezes at different thicknesses throughout in different areas of the lake, and if you do venture out on the lake, use caution," said Marquette County Sheriff's Deputy Errol Lukkarinen.

The sheriff's office recommends that if you go out on the ice, wear a floatation device, bring an auger to test thickness, and let friends and family know when you go out and when you will be back.
