MARQUETTE -- Monday is the 93rd anniversary of the Republic of Finland's independence, and some local Finnish residents held a celebration in Marquette.

The event was held at the Masonic Center on Washington Street and featured music, poetry, and food.  Also on hand was Markku Kauppinen from the Finnish Embassy in Washington, D.C.

Kauppinen spoke of the importance of ties between Finland and its residents around the world, especially in the current global economy.

"In a larger picture, relations between Finland and the United States and Europe and the United States, I think all these relations make small steps or small sort of elements which make a bigger picture," said Kauppinen.

Following the presentations, attendees enjoyed a coffee social where they were able to speak with Kauppinen and share stories.
