SCHOOLCRAFT COUNTY -- The Schoolcraft County Sheriff's Department has a 25-year-old suspect in custody in regards to a breaking and entering and "safe-cracking" incident that took place this last August.

The incident occurred at the Big Springs Gift Shop, located in Thompson Township.

The arrest is a result of an extensive several month investigation, but Undersheriff Mike Gierkie says that they aren't finished looking in to this incident.

"We have our primary suspect in custody, however, we haven't eliminated the possibility that there could be more persons involved, or this incident could be related to others in the county," said Gierkie.  "But this gives us a solid starting point to piece this incident together and hopefully help the business impacted work toward closure."

The Schoolcraft County Sheriff Grant Harris was equally pleased with the results, especially given the current budget constraints recently imposed on his department.

"I'm very happy this investigation is progressing as fast as it is.  The Undersheriff and his team have worked very hard, often volunteering time to close this case," said Harris.  "This is a classic example of why our patrol functions need to be restored and the road patrol grant needs to be accepted...because the citizens of Schoolcraft County deserve to have their complaints handled and calls for services answered."

The name of the suspect in custody is being withheld pending his arraignment in District Court.
