MARQUETTE -- College-aged women are the largest target for violence and sexual assault. Experts say a lot of that has to do with drinking habits on college campuses.
A class at NMU called "Babes and Booze" is designed to teach young women the effects of alcohol and what steps they can take to keep themselves safe.
Women were provided tips such as practicing moderation, keeping sight of their drink at all times, and to go out with a group.
Organizers say the most important tip is to be aware of your surroundings.
"A lot of times when you're in a college setting, you might not be aware of the amount that you are drinking, especially if you're at a party and you are given a cup and that cup is constantly being refilled," said NMU Health Promotions Assistant, Jessi Bentti.
The program was sponsored by Northern's Health Promotions office and skill builders for student enrichment.
