MARQUETTE COUNTY -- A change is coming to the current laws associated with operating while intoxicated.  Effective October 31, anyone operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content of .17 percent or higher will face enhanced penalties.

The penalties include more time in jail, up to 180 days, increased fines anywhere from $200-$700, and a one-year license suspension.

"I think it's to create a greater awareness of the seriousness of driving while intoxicated, and even as your blood alcohol level goes up, your driving is going to become worse, and the chances of being involved in a serious or fatal traffic crash are that much greater," said Sgt. John Bruno of the Michigan State Police.

Alcohol rehabilitation is also mandatory if you are found to have a high blood alcohol content.

The current law for a DUI, a blood alcohol content of .08, will remain the same.
