Charlotte Loonsfoot enters "no contest" plea
MARQUETTE -- One of the protestors charged with trespassing at Kennecott's Eagle Mine site gave up the right for a trial today by pleading "no contest" at the Marquette County District Court.
Charlotte Loonsfoot was arrested in May for refusing to leave property leased by Kennecott.
Following her plea, Loonsfoot received a 30-day delay of sentence and must pay $173 in court costs and fines.
"I feel OK. I wish we could have went further with it, but I didn't feel confident that the release would be let into court," says Charlotte Loonsfoot. "I just feel like I wasn't going to get a fair trial."
About 20 of her supporters held a demonstration around the Marquette County District Courthouse in opposition of the Eagle Mine following her sentencing.Loonsfoot says she plans to continue to attempt to bring change to the area by running for Keweenaw Bay Council.
