Marquette Police start safety initiative
MARQUETTE -- People do it every morning and evening: commute to work in the busy South US-41 corridor, and every day, they are risking their lives.
The four-lane road between the Marquette Michigan Welcome Center and the roundabout poses a number of threats.
"Being it's a high traffic volume area and that the speeds are higher because it's a four-lane roadway, those accidents tend to be a lot more severe," said Marquette Police Captain, Blake Rieboldt. "A small mistake on that corridor is really an opportunity to have a really serious accident."
One-hundred-eighty-nine accidents have occurred on the corridor within the last five years--three of them were fatal and one of them, just within the past year.
But Marquette Police are trying to nip danger in the bud. They're publicizing the problem, patrolling the corridor five days a week during its busiest hours.
"We're going to step up patrol with minor traffic violations such as speeding, careless driving. We'll have someone down here every day, Monday through Friday," said Marquette Police Sgt. Ryan Grim.
Officers are specifically targeting left lane offenders--those who drive continuously and illegally in the left passing lane.
"What's happening is you're getting somebody riding in the left-hand lane, you're getting somebody riding in the right-hand lane, and that's clogging up the ability to make traffic flow freely," Captain Rieboldt said.
If you're caught in the act, it will cost you a $125 civil infraction ticket.
