FRANKLIN TWP. -- The Quincy Smelter hasn't been in use since 1971, but there are organizations that are actively trying to make use of, and preserve, the property.

Back in March, officials were in talks about potentially moving the Isle Royale National Park Headquarters and docking facilities across the lake to the Quincy Smelter Site.  Keweenaw National Historical Park staff asked the Houghton and Hancock city councils for their support to explore the possible relocation.

Over the past 20 years, nearly a million dollars have been spent fixing up the site.

No word yet on what caused the blaze as fire officials are still investigating.
