MARQUETTE -- Federal lawmakers are once again asking the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to remove the gray wolf from the endangered species list.

The Fish and Wildlife Service plans to release a publication in response to petitions filed by Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.  This step will kick off a 12 month review to determine if delisting the wolf is warranted.

Although this has been attempted three other times, the DNRE says it's necessary to be done.

"This is really critical for us to help control problem wolves which are a very small percentage of the wolves," said Wildlife Biologist Brian Roell.  "But by not having that ability to take wolves that are causing livestock deprivation or other issues, it erodes a social acceptance of wolves."

The DNRE will take the next 60 days to gather information for the Fish and Wildlife Service to help support delisting.
