SCHOOLCRAFT COUNTY -- Schoolcraft County Sheriff Grant Harris will stay on the job.  By a margin of just 61 votes, the sheriff recall proposal was defeated Tuesday night.

A group of residents, calling themselves the "Recall Committee," believed Harris misused tax payer money and failed to mediate a budget in a timely matter.  That's why they put the issue on the August ballot.

But, the voters didn't pass it.

The sheriff says he was confident the voters would do the right thing.

Those with the committee hope other elected officials can learn from this.

"We just want all elected officials to realize that we put them in there, and we'd like them to work in our best interests," said Recall Committee Member, Bonnie Garvin.

"I don't think they had all the facts and really understood the issue.  I'm really glad that it's over, and I just want to get on with my job and try to serve the residents of Schoolcraft County," said Sheriff Harris.

Harris has been the Schoolcraft County Sheriff since 2008.
