MICHIGAN'S 1ST DISTRICT -- Even though the polls closed across the state Tuesday evening, the results of the 1st Congressional District Republican primary are still unclear.  Both Dan Benishek and Jason Allen declared victory early Wednesday morning.

More than 66,000 votes were tallied, and according to the Secretary of State's website, Benishek won by a single vote.

Canvassers from all 31 counties in the district will tally the votes and report them to the state.  The Secretary of State's office has until August 23 to make its results official.

Benishek, Wednesday, said he stands by his victory.

“We were up and down, and I'm just happy that we held on and I got the win by one vote,” said Benishek.  “It's a victory for the citizens of Michigan's 1st District as well, and I hope we can all come together to support and defend this victory.”

A statement was released to Upper Michigan’s Source by Denise DeCook, a spokesperson for Jason Allen.

"We want to let the election officials do their work so they can provide an accurate count and note where there are discrepancies…I owe the voters who voted for me that we are getting an accurate count."
