IRON MOUNTAIN -- After a long night of ups and downs, both Dan Benishek and Jason Allen are declaring victory in the First Congressional District’s Republican primary.

Both sides declared victory early Wednesday morning after 100 percent of the precincts were reported in the district.

The Associated Press is reporting Benishek won the race by 102 votes, but the Michigan Secretary of State is saying Benishek won by one vote:  27,091 to 27,090.

“I’ve got a real big smile on my face right now, and it’s the biggest smile I’ve had all night,” said Benishek.  “I’m just proud of the people in my district that have supported me, and I plan to represent all the people in the district and take my message to Washington.”

In an e-mail to Upper Michigan’s Source, Jason Allen also declared victory.

"I am humbled by the support I have received from across the First Congressional District and honored to have earned the Republican nomination for the general election,” said Allen.

Given the vote separating the candidates, it’s likely a recount will occur.
