ISHPEMING -- Baseball, football, soccer, basketball, volleyball and cheerleading.  All are popular summer camps, but how does a kid pick just one?

A camp program in Ishpeming brings them all to one place with some expert advice.

Retired basketball coach Irv Dieterle spent 40 years teaching the game to high school students at Westwood High School.  This week he is coaching for a different team.

"This is my chance to give back to the Lord all the things he has given to me.  I really feel fortunate that I get a chance to work with these young kids,” says Dieterle.

He’s helping out at the Mega Sports Camp in Ishpeming, a week crammed with a variety of sports for kids to choose from.

Dieterle is not alone.  Many are eager to help kids stay active at the Good News Assembly Church program.

"I enjoy doing this for the little kids, teaching them what I know, being a football player myself in Negaunee,” says football volunteer Geoffrey Blandford.

Volunteers are giving more than their time.  Donations have made more equipment available, like a pitching machine new to the baseball portion of the camp, as well as the field itself.

"Last time there wasn't as much room as up here; this makes for a good baseball field,” says baseball coach Chuck Hurley.

The number of kids enjoying these opportunities continues to grow.  They set an attendance record last year, and this year the camp is right on track to set yet another record.

Organizers say there’s one big difference between the record-breaking numbers last year and this year.  Last year a lot of the campers were older, return campers.  This year, many of these kids are much younger, and it’s their first year at camp.

Many of these first-timers say it’s something they'd like to repeat next year.

"It’s a good workout and it's fun to play with other people,” says first-time camper Luke Branson.

"Besides getting up in the morning--I’m really not an early riser--but it’s pretty fun," says Emlee Solka.

"This camp rocks,” says Cody Niskane.
