MARQUETTE -- Members of the Marquette Downtown Development Authority, city officials, and county health department employees put their heads together to try and improve biking in Marquette.

"Training Wheels" is a program intended to make roads safer for bicyclist and motorists.

Those in attendance took a bike ride around town in search of where improvements could be made.  Some suggested more signs, pavement markings, and countdown lights at crosswalks.

"What we'd like to be able to do is get your bike out of the basement, drive it to the trail head, or take your bike to school, take it to the library, take it to the post office; use your bike for those things instead of driving every place," said John LaPlante of TY LIN International.

The program is provided free of charge by the Michigan Department of Transportation.

The "Training Wheels" is making its way through the U.P. this week.
