Seventeen organizations and agencies helped out with the second annual event
ONTONAGON -- Dozens of Western U.P. residents filled the hallway at Ontonagon Elementary School Friday afternoon for the second annual Senior Day. Many stopped by the Community Health Center table to have their blood sugar and bone density tested before checking out the rest of the displays.
"Our main concern was to see how we could supplement our Medicare with another insurance program," said Lynn Distel. "We’ve gathered all kinds of information."
Seventeen agencies from Ontonagon and Gogebic Counties helped out with the event. There were also a few special guests in the crowd, including Representative Mike Lahti and TV6's own Carl Pellonpaa.
"When I was a kid and your grandparents got old, they came back and lived at home with you," said Lahti. "But because of the work by these seniors, we've got a society and a state with a better life for seniors."
After everyone had a chance to visit all of the tables, the party moved to the school gymnasium. The seniors enjoyed a full lunch compliments of the Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital, listened to live music, and some even won raffle prizes.
"It’s especially important in Ontonagon County because these seniors have weathered the good, the bad, and the ugly," said Teresa Way. "They’re still here, they've stayed strong in their commitment to the community, and they're proud to be an Ontonagon County resident, so today's for them."
The event drew even more seniors and organizations this year, and Way hopes it continues to expand in the future, because seniors will always have questions. She adds that it's important for them to get the answers.
