Negaunee Male Chorus performs this weekend
ISHPEMING -- They've been entertaining crowds for over 80 years and they're also the largest all male chorus in the U.P.
This weekend, the Negaunee Male Chorus will present, "Let There Be Music".
Friday, the historic Peterson Auditorium in Ishpeming will be filled with harmonies dating back to the 17th century. Also on stage, the sounds of a barber shop quartet and a gospel group.
"I'm sure anybody that came and age would be entertained; were kinda going through the whole gammit of let there be music," said the show's Master of Ceremomies, Bill Schrandt.
Show tunes and songs from popular movies are also on the list.
"We used to stand up there in full dress and do an entire concert just in full dress. Now we like to break it the second half and have some comedy," Schrandt added.
Each performer spends hours learning 200 pages of music, and that effort pays off.
"When you hear an all male chorus that resonates and is in tune, it's just a very special sound. It's a big sound," stated Chorus President Rob Velale.
Tenors, bass, and baritones make up the 35 member group. The chorus also has a wide range of ages, 21 being the youngest to some in their late 80s.
"We're kind of a family--we take care of each other, we have some great soloists, but most of us are just common voices," Veale added.
But together, the group that has been together for decades, will hit their mark and leave you wowed.
"To please an audience, that's what it's all about," Veale admitted.
If you would like to see the concert, it's $7. You can get tickets from any chorus member or at the door. They're also available at many Negaunee and Ishpeming businesses.
The show gets underway at 7 p.m.
