MARQUETTE TWP. -- Out with the old, in with the new.  And that especially applies to dishwashers.

A new state program is encouraging Michigan residents to replace their old appliances with ones that are newer and more energy-efficient.

TJ Brown of Michigan Energy Options says, "I think it's important for Michigan residents to understand and be leaders and when it comes to conserving water."

The more efficient the appliance, the more of a rebate you can get.  There are 119,000 rebates available in the state.  The rebates range anywhere from $25 to $50, but not all of the appliances qualify, so the best way to know which ones do, is to ask.

Rob Plotezka, appliance manager at American in Marquette Twp., says, "They want to remove those old dishwashers or old appliances off, so they'll give you a rebate for purchasing a new, higher efficient dishwasher or washer than your old model."

It's also important to reserve your rebate before you go buy your new dishwasher, that way you know which models qualify.  It allows you up to 14 days to make your decision.  Either way, you can save money and energy at the same time.

"Replacing old, existing appliances has been proven to reduce energy usage in homes up to 15 or 20 percent, so it's important to upgrade your appliances for long-term cost savings, energy reduction strategies," Brown says.
